The Scottish Arts Council announced in June that it has proposed cutting over £300,000 to the Byre Theatre over the next two years. Without this investment the Byre’s ability to continue its dynamic artistic and educational programme is placed in jeopardy.
How can you help us? We are appealing this decision and need your help to tell Creative Scotland why you believe the Byre Theatre should not have this vital investment removed and should be supported to carry out its valuable role in the Fife community and also our strategic national role.

In an entertaining evening, full of zest and humour, legendary actor, John Cairney, explores what actors have been doing off and on stage as they go about their business of pretending to be someone else in public for money.
John Cairney is well known to audiences in Scotland and internationally through his one-man shows about Burns. Indeed, in many minds he is synonymous with the Bard and is considered as one of the leading interpreters of the works of Robert Burns. In more than fifty years as an artist, he has worked as an actor, recitalist, lecturer, director and theatre consultant. He is also a published author and an exhibited painter. Trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, he was a notable 'Hamlet' at the Citizens' Theatre, a popular Cyrano de Bergerac at Newcastle, and Macbeth at the Edinburgh Festival. He was also 'This Man Craig' on television and has appeared in many films like 'Jason and the Argonauts' and 'Cleopatra'.
For the last seventeen years John Cairney was based in Auckland, New Zealand, where he gained his PhD. He is much in demand as a lecturer, writer and consultant on Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Robert Burns. Dr Cairney has written books on each of these famous Scots, as well as other books on football, theatre and his native Glasgow, where he now lives permanently with his New Zealand wife, actress and scriptwriter, Alannah O'Sullivan. John Cairney was recently made a Freeman Citizen of Glasgow.

It achieved international recognition after winning the Contemporary Prize at the Evian-les-Bains String Quartet Competition and has since toured extensively across Europe, the Far East, North and South America and the Middle East. The Quartet is resident at Glasgow University and Edinburgh Napier University and also collaborates with Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities. In addition to a regular classical concert series at each of these institutions, the Quartet is committed to nurturing talent and championing new music. The ensemble has worked with many important and prolific composers of our age, including the Quartet's patron, James MacMillan and Michael Tippett, who selected the Edinburgh Quartet's recording of his First Quartet for re-release on EMI shortly before his death. This recording is representative of the Edinburgh Quartet's extensive discography available on various labels such as Delphian, Linn, Meridian and RCA. Recent recordings include the complete Hans Gal String Quartets ('Editor's Choice' Gramophone Magazine, 2007), the complete Kenneth Leighton String Quartets ( 'The unanimity of their ensemble, even at the densest polyphonic moments in flying scherzo tempo, is very impressive.' BBC Music Magazine), as well as discs of Bartok, Robert Crawford, Haydn, Schubert and Thomas Wilson. Future releases include the complete Matyas Seiber Quartets on Delphian Records, which were featured on a live broadcast by the Edinburgh Quartet on BBC Radio 3.

But Doyle's dangerous strategy, combined with his passion for raising the spirits of the dead, has rather more surreal and dramatic consequences than he bargains for!

A Promised Land is a story of freedom and captivity, loyalty and love, political coercion and personal self-sacrifice. It revolves around the true story of Dumfriesshire born Jane Haining , ‘the Scottish Schindler’, who saved many Jewish children from the fate she was to suffer herself in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.
Premiered at the Scottish Storytelling Centre during the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this new play casts a spotlight on the life of the Church of Scotland missionary Jane Haining, sometimes referred to as “The Scottish Schindler”. The play breaks fresh ground in our understanding of Jane’s work with Jewish children, mostly orphans, in Budapest and her subsequent murder in Auschwitz. Jane is the only Scot recognised as 'Righteous Among Nations' at Yad Vashem the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Since its first performance, the British government has honoured Jane Haining posthumously with a new British Heroes of the Holocaust award.

Following rave reviews and sell-out performances in 2008 and 2009, Magnetic North once again presents its beautiful one-man adaptation of this classic meditation on self-sufficiency, the individual’s relationship with the environment and the desire ‘not to live cheaply or dearly but to live deliberately’.
Performed in a unique, intimate setting designed by visual artists Sans façon, the capacity for each performance of Walden is strictly limited.

Does revenge justify murder? The spirit of a murdered king, the wrath of a vengeful son, and the turmoil of Denmark in 1604. Shakespeare’s most iconic and challenging play - arguably the world’s greatest dramatic work - tells the tale of young Prince Hamlet avenging his father’s death and fighting the new King who stole his throne.
Hamlet asks these questions as he struggles to find one moral absolute in a murderous, corrupt world.
Condensed and using solely Shakespeare’s text, this will be a fresh, kinetic, and above all accessible production, perfect for students and adults alike to learn or re-visit the story. This is an ensemble play with respect for realism and the beauty of the verse blended with physical theatre and a subtle score.

Born in Paris in 1976, Pascal Ayerbe calls himself “the sound scribbler” (le gribouilleur sonore). With a unique blend of traditional instruments and ordinary everyday items, he creates his own special world of musical characters. His technique is scribbling. Take whatever object if it makes noise (plastic toys, utensils, bowed saw, toy piano), then tame it, give it another life, another meaning, through sound. Somehow, it is a lesson of diverting. "Flatten yourself, hide yourself, I stick my ears everywhere, I strip your attics and hit your saucepans as does the green woodpecker!" Ayerbe creates music as discoveries, from haphazard and clumsy strokes of inspiration, which makes him an unclassifiable key composer.
On a set dominated by a large tree, three sound-gardening musicians creates a zany collection of outrageously entertaining and quirky melodies. Discover a whimsical symphony where mandolin, accordion, bass clarinet, ukulele, banjo, bells, bird calls and bow saw... join plastic toys and kitchen utensils to create an energetic, fun and charming concert. Born in Paris in 1976, Pascal Ayerbe calls himself "the sound scribbler". He creates music as dicoveries, from haphazard and clumsy strokes of inspiration, which makes him an unclassifiable key composer. Trio for a green pea paces up and down, right and left of a lot of concert halls in France, also in Brasil, Canada and China. The programme has been performed over 250 times since its creation in 2007.

Haydn Symphony No 86 in D ‘Paris’ Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No 1 Fauré Élégie Ravel Ma Mère L’Oye (Mother Goose)
Ravel never lost touch with his inner child, and his music brings an appropriately magical and fantastical flavour to this December concert. Mother Goose, inspired by timeless fairy tales and originally written for some young friends to play at the piano, is recreated here in miraculous orchestral colour. Langrée offers it in the company of the Grand Old Men of Ravel’s Paris: Saint-Saëns and Fauré in a lovely mixed programme that looks back as far as the 1780s when Haydn was all the rage in the French capital.

Haydn Scena di Berenice Stravinsky Apollon Musagète Fauré Melodies (orch. world premiere C. Matthews) SCO commission Haydn Symphony No 96 ‘Miracle’
A heart-warming richness gives Sally Matthews’ voice the special star quality that makes her the soprano of choice for maestros the world over. With Ticciati, she brings Haydn’s scena – a touch of operatic high drama to match Stravinsky’s dance – then follows it with Fauré’s heartbreaking, melancholy songs in new orchestrations from Colin Matthews commissioned by the SCO. As for the Haydn… the name says it all: truly, this symphony is a miracle – one of his very finest.
Pre-concert talk: 6.30pm (free to ticket holders) Robin Ticciati in conversation with Dr Michael Downes about the music in this evening’s concert.
Battistelli Fair is foul, foul is fair Berio Folk Songs Harper Pastoral (ed./arr. world premiere Cresswell) SCO commission Britten Suite on English Folk Tunes (A time there was)
As part of StAnza 2011, this special concert celebrates verse in music. One of the hits of the 2009 Edinburgh International Festival, Battistelli’s is a corker of a piece vividly evoking the storm and supernatural terror of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Sorrow touches the premiere of Edward Harper’s Pastoral, which is a setting of Burns’ poetry. When he died in 2009, Harper was working on a new symphony for the SCO and his friend Lyell Cresswell has completed this single movement from his manuscript in tribute. Favourite arias by two of the greatest operatic composers of their respective ages sung by an acclaimed young mezzo of the moment. This concert is a must for any opera lover – and it comes with the symphonic bonus of Haydn’s hugely entertaining ‘Bear’ symphony, full of rustic influences. Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ symphony, on the other hand, is a suitably grand work written for one of the grandest of the great Salzburg families.
