The Byre Theatre, St Andrews University And Fife Council Education Department Present:

Israel Horovitz Residency: The P Word

“The P Word,’’ is a new Horovitz play that tackles a topic much in the news in the US and in Scotland lately: teen pregnancy. The Byre Theatre will engage professional and St Andrews University student actors to work with Israel to bring this new work to a rehearsed reading stage at The Byre Theatre and to sit Isreal’s own recent work alongside the scripts produced by the student Ten By Ten project.

“I was surprised that I wrote ‘The P Word.’ But it was a subject that I wanted to attack. “I was in Scotland when I read in the newspaper about this alleged pregnancy pact with 19 Gloucester girls. It was certainly a good read, but when I got home it just wasn’t true,’’ he says. “But it got me thinking about the subject.’’ He ended up assisting the producer of a forthcoming HBO documentary on teen pregnancy in the area and learning a lot.

“Many of the girls who were pregnant at age 15 or 16 had mothers who were pregnant with them at 15 or 16, and those mothers had mothers who were pregnant at 15 or 16. It’s pretty astonishing,’’ he says. “So I wanted to dig into some of the reasons why, other than the obvious “
