Haydays at the Byre is part of the Education Department of the Byre Theatre of St Andrews.
Haydays at the Byre is committed to providing opportunities for new learning within the local community and is open to those aged 50+.
Our classes vary and are a combination of established favourites and new topics. We hope that our members find the combination interesting, fun and a great opportunity to make new friends or meet old ones.
Our classes include: painting/drawing, singing for fun, jewellery making,bridge for beginners & improvers, stained glass, canasta for fun. Ten laptops are available for classes such as improve your digital photos. Our Singing with Ella class is a singing for fun class and places are available for both ladies & men. No previous experience required or music reading skills. Our 'create a garden gargoyle in clay' class will be fun for all taking part and remind us that spring in the garden is not too far away. Bellringing for all is also a new class this block.
The classes run on a Tuesday between 9.20am and 4.15pm during the school terms and vary from 5 to 8 weeks duration. Terms are: January 24th - February 21st - 5 weeks, February 28th - March 27th - 5 weeks, Easter Break, April 17th- May 22nd - 6 weeks, May 29th - June 26th - 5 weeks. We then have our summer break and resume in late August.
The annual membership is £22 but from January this fee is reduced to £11. The fee for each class is £4/£5. Membership fees are due in August and class fees are normally paid in advance.
Payment of the annual membership fee allows you to come along to our lunchtime talks & book group. It is not necessary to take part in classes, although we would hope that you find something of interest at some point! Talks and book group take place in the conference room from 12.30pm -1.15pm. Bring along your packed lunch or a snack from Kingarroch at The Byre.
Two books are available to take home in our book group with a discussion to follow at the next meeting of the group.

- Stained Glass:
- Enjoy making your own piece of stained glass with Liz Rowley. No experience or tools required.
- SalsaJive:
- Carlyn Kirkaldy will introduce a variety of dance styles & routines. A great way to start the day.
- ByreRhythm is a permanent closed charity group involved in Taiko drumming.
- Bridge for Beginners & Improvers:
- Our tutor, Laura Porro's passion for bridge will encourage all levels of player. A great pastime to make friends and improve your memory.
- Jewellery & Bead Making:
- Make your own beads and/or create unique jewellery under Linda's guidance with access to her vast range of beads etc.
- No previous experience is required.
- Canasta for Fun:
- Fun loving card game for those of any age - an ideal family game. Make new friends whilst playing this quick & easy game.
- Improve your digital photos:
- Using our laptops, Stan will show you various techniques to make those special event photos look professional.
- Please bring along your memory stick plus pen & paper.
- Painting and Illustration:
- Create beautiful pieces of work with painting & drawing techniques including collage,acrylic & pastels. Beginners very welcome.
- Singing with Ella:
- A 'singing for fun' class - please come along and try it - ladies & men would be welcome. No previous experience required.
- Painting & Drawing 1&2:
Introducing a variety of different materials and subject matter with Adela to guide and inspire you. Beginners very welcome.
- Create a Garden Gargoyle in Clay:
- Create your unique garden ornament with Jenny, who will organise materials & firing. Estimated cost for a gargoyle is £5.
- Please bring along a smooth cotton tea towel and an apron.
- Bellringing for All:
- Try out the ancient art of handbells. Handbells allowed bellringers to practise anywhere. For this beginners class, music reading skills are not necessary, only the ability to count to four! Come along and find out more!
