The Lawrence Levy studio is a highly flexible venue with a seated capacity of up to 80. Recent examples of activities in the studio include full theatrical performances, yoga classes, dance performances, award ceremonies & training days to name just a few.

The Lawrence Levy Studio is a black box space measuring 9m by 11.80m with a fixed grid at 5.20m. The Byre has a stock of seating and decking to allow for numerous seating and staging configurations. There is a separate control room in one corner for lighting and sound along with a modest stock of lanterns and sound equipment. Please see our technical specification below as equipment can also be shared from the A.B. Paterson Auditorium, subject to availability. Projection is possible on the retractable screen mounted on the wall opposite the main entrance. Rehearsals also benefit from the permanent full-height mirrors and dance bars. For a lighter atmosphere, the blackout blinds can be opened allowing natural light into the space.

As well as the main entrance to the studio there are two fire exit doors (identified on the plans below with the words "Fire Exit") It is important that your set and seating do not do not restrict access to these doors and a minimum of a 1.1m wide ‘corridor’ is created. Please consult the Operations or Technical Managers in good time (at least three weeks prior to your performance or event) if you are planning to bring a large or complicated set or seating arrangement to the Lawrence Levy Studio so that we can ensure it conforms to our fire regulations. Finally, please note that as the Lawrence Levy Studio Theatre is on the top floor of the building, access is via internal staircases or passenger lift which does restrict the size and weight of sets and other items brought into the space.

The Lawrence Levy Studio has two dressings rooms accessed directly from the space which can accommodate 6 and 4 people comfortably. The main dressing rooms can also be utilised, subject to availability.
